Freiburg

This year's 16th meeting of female physicists of the DPG takes place in Freiburg, Germany's „southernmost metropole“, close to France and Switzerland. Embedded between the Black-Forest mountains and the rolling hills of Kaiserstuhl, it is especially attractive for nature-loving, outdoor enthusiasts. The many students of the over 550 years old university and further higher educational institutions create the atmosphere of a young and lively city. But not only the quality of living is extraordinary in Freiburg. The excellent universities and worldwide reknown research institutes – amongts them the large Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) – offer a inspiring environment for scientist.

For city discovery tours:

  • If you want to get an overview over the historic center, the best spot is the top of Freiburg's main landmark, the Muenster's (cathedral's) bell tower. From monday to saturday there is a large farmer' market in front of it.
  • From the nearby 'Schlossberg' – hill, with some luck, you get a view as far as the mountains of the french Vosgues.
  • At nights, visit Augustinerplatz, Feierling Breweries beergarden, or one of the numerous bars like Schlappen, Schachtel, Art-Cafe, or Legere in the historic center for a beer, glass of wine, local speciallity 'Flammkuchen'.
  • If you're interested in concerts check out Badische Zeitung or www.fudder.de. Typical venues are e.g. Jazzhaus, Whiterabbit, Jos Fritz Cafe.
  • Information on Freiburg as a Green-City is available here.
